It’s the Twitter Generation….

…coming at you, feeling free. What do Twitter and Pepsi have in common? Not a theme song, that’s for sure. But something generational for sure — less to do with age and more to do with Web 2.0ishness.

Anyway, if you’ve run out of people to tweet, Pro Blogger Darren Rowse has a list of 538 Twitterati who are hungry for followers. I’m #425 on that list; my lovely wife Xtina (and her blog, Geek Girlfriends) is at #411. It’s an interesting social experiment, one that I’m almost positive will bring Twitter to its virtual knees.
At some point very soon, the Top Twits are going to have to monetize that sucker. It’s the only way they’ll be able to handle the load. VC money can’t carry them forever. And what will Twitter look like then? Will I be getting tweets for Pepsi and Preparation H. along with the intimate details of what total strangers had for breakfast? Post your thoughts below on the future of Twitter, if you have any.
More evidence that Twitter has gone mainstream: I just wrote about them for my August US Airways Magazine column, which will be posted here soon. When the guy in seat 17C is reading about Twitter, something elemental has shifted, I think.
What will Twitter look like in six months? A year? Will it be around five years from now?
