Pick an OS, Any OS will do…

So there’s a lot of news this week about the ‘death’ of Windows XP. (I’ll have more thoughts on that later.) For now, though, let’s pretend just for fun that you could pick any operating system for your next PC — no monolithic monopolies can get in your way. Which would you pick? Fill out the following BuzzDash poll and let your voice be heard.

I just did vote with my pocketbook. Bought a Dell Latitude D-530 with XP Pro and Vista on the side. Vista will stay on the side.
Like XP
Let’s see . . .
1. OS X: You’re a beautiful, reliable OS. But your proprietary status makes you too expensive and too limiting in application.
2. Linux: Your price is right, but you’re still too difficult for the average user and like OS X your application base is too small.
3. XP: Why would I pay good money for a 7-year-old system that’s been patched more times than the S.S. Minnow.
4. Vista: I guess you win by default. . . . Faint praise indeed!
vista stinks
XP is a stable and relatively secure robust operating system. Why would you take it off the market for a OS (Vista) that doesn’t run on installed hardware, is slow on new hardware, and still has less than steller support for external hardware? Oh, did I mention Vista incompatible with anything you already own? The internal emails leaked from MS said it best, “I purchased a fast new laptop that was Vista ready, it runs nothing. I have a new slower email web browsing laptop, I already had one of those.” Okay parapharsed.
XP is dead because Vista is not worth the media it comes on.
Vista stable, well maybe if the box isnt open and still on the shelf!
Anymore with the virtual machine tools, it is difficult to pick one operating system. I prefer OS X as my host OS, but I can’t live in my field (transportation planning) without XP. Not only that, but Office 2004 and 2008 for OS X are terribly slow and lack some basic features, so if I need to use Word, Excel, or PowerPoint for any length of time, I use XP (although I am starting to use Google Docs more and more).
If I didn’t run a business the matter of an operating wouldn’t matter. It’s not the cost of the Vista software that bothers me, it’s the cost of all the other software that will not run on Vista that ticks me off. Not to mention the hardware switch that I would have to purchase to run my vinyl cutter (Yes I’m in the sign business). So, Microsoft, keep your new operating, When I can no longer run my business on Window’s XP, I’ll either retire or purchase a MAC and go through 10 miles of hell with that system before I ever own another Window’s Operating System again. Thank god for DELL.
I run XP on four machines and Ubuntu on another machine. Hell will freeze over before I install Vista. Dell’s customer support may stink to high heaven but their marketing is smart to continue selling XP.
My assessment is that for the vast majority of enterprise IT shops, Vista is not — and likely never will be — the right choice for their immediate desktop computing needs.
What’s all the fuss about. Vista is in, XP is out. We need to get used to it. I have been using Vista for a year now. It works fine. Nobody wanted XP when it came out, now they don’t want to let it go. It will be the same with Vista. Microsoft has to make money to pay all their employees, other wise the job loss of recent weeks will be staggeringly worse. So good luck to them.
Vista is just a disaster.
& then Windows 7, other disaster from Microsoft.
If it ain’t broke,then don’t try to mend it….
xp is a much more stable os. I would rather stay with a older system that is more stable and can run all my software than go to a new system that has new bells and whistles that is incompatible with my software.
[...] or extra crispy? Cast your vote below or email me here: cringe (at) infoworld (dot) com. You can also take the BuzzDash poll; I’ll post the results in a future blog [...]
I voted for XP because it now works well, admittedly with $150 worth of accessory software that provides security, provides information about “add-on” files, and cleans up clutter and does the “garbage-collection” that the M$ systems never did well.
At the same time I am trying to learn Ubuntu to avoid having to tackle Vista.
after using the 95 98 and now xp
I think that we don’T need another os to bother with.It seems that the vista isn’t that wonderful.
That’s business for you.
I live in the uk and read a good magazine every fortnight. It is called Computeractive. Reading the current version there is an article telling us that Microsoft has caved in and will support Windows XP until 2014. That is great for we will continue to get security upgrades and fixes!
XP is the operating system that Microsoft has ever put out. I’m on my fourth Win 95, Wins 98 & 98 SE and now XP. Folks XP is great, Vista shows every of being as bad five years from now as it is today. Work on XP and Vista and Apple and it’s various systems. I like being able to do things to improve and suit my interest better. I’ll bet most folks with OS X would be scared to death to do something to anything Apple. But hey this is about XP versus Vista and not which computer “god” you serve. For the record I’m a religious person but sometimes if the shoe you have just got to wear ‘em. Vista sucks and God with a capital “G” please, please save XP. Reguarding you Apple fols this really isn’t about you so enjoy your toy.
who°s idea to shoot down windows xp? gush.
After graduating from ‘98, to ‘2000, then on to xp pro I’ve come to like all the pros of xp. I’ve done a lot of research on Microsoft’s new Vistavirus OS. I’ll tell you now that xp is best hands down. Maybe if Microsoft had actually designed a real and thought out OS instead of trying to grab more money by throwing a bunch of code in a blender then I might be singing it’s praises. Possibly in a few years Microsoft will be able to get Vista up and working (hopefully), then I’ll probably use it unless I get a handle on Linux.
